Expecting the Lords mercy, from the Tenth Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam [10.14.8]: My dear Lord, one who earnestly waits for You to bestow Your causeless mercy upon him, all the while patiently suffering the reactions of his past misdeeds and offering You respectful obeisances with his heart, words and body, is surely eligible for liberation, for it has become his rightful claim.
Today’s questions:
* When you went to chant non-stop in Hawaii, you were engaged 24 hours in intense focus on Kṛṣṇa. What was the buildup to that? Was it a sudden decision or was it a more gradual, natural progression?
* I find that it’s difficult to get deep into the Holy Name when chanting on a bus or some similar environment. I saw that Prabhupāda always did it. Is that just to set an example and for preaching?
* Is it appropriate to correct a devotee who is senior in age if he is making offenses? What is the appropriate way to deal with such situations?
* Did you approach elderly sādhus in India for advice back in 1991 when you were looking for pointers from advanced devotees?

We complete the discussion of the Maṅgalācaraṇam of Śrī Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu:
akhila-rasāmṛta-mūrtiḥ prasṛmara-ruci-ruddha-tārakā-pāliḥ |
kalita-śyāmā-lalito rādhā-preyān vidhur jayati ||1.1.1||
“Kṛṣṇa, the destroyer of all sin and the bestower of all bliss, the very form of the highest bliss, filled with all rasas, excels all others in glory. He brings Tārakā and Pālikā under His control by the diffusion of His beauty; He accepts Śyāmalā and Lālitā as His equals; and gives pleasure to Rādhā with His excellent qualities.”
Questions:
* Please accept my humble obeisances. What is the significance of Krsna’s shark earrings? Are there pastimes with sharks?
* Where can I find more information on the gopis?
* What’s the reason why different people on battle arena saw Krsna differently?
* Why is Krsna often displayed with a peacock feather or a peacock?
* Is Krsna only the incarnation that displays all the 12 Rasas? Or Lord Sri Krsna Caitanya part of it also?

Western materialistic culture is based on the misconception that we are the owners and enjoyers of the resources of the earth. Thus in a very short time we have practically exhausted the resources and values of the earth: metals, oil, soil, forests, oceans and so on. We have contaminated the whole planet and killed so many innocent animals, plants and people. The karma from all this irresponsible exploitation is very bad, and that karma has come due. Thus the whole materialistic civilization is collapsing. This is all due to complete ignorance of the real nature of consciousness. Consciousness is a taboo subject in the West; all the authentic ancient knowledge of consciousness has been suppressed. You cannot find it anywhere. We are connected with the original disciplic lineage of the Esoteric Teaching of the Vedas, which describes consciousness scientifically. That means it is not a theory, not a belief, but a process that you can test by experiment and verify for yourself. Thus we do not ask for faith, but for real knowledge based on experience.

We are all looking for the perfect place in this world, but there cannot be anyplace more perfect than the places where Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa performed His pastimes. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not something ‘out there’ that we have to get, but something already existing within that we have to rediscover.

To attain the higher reaches of devotional service, one must overcome the four types of anarthas or disqualifications based on material desires and activities. Every time we try to describe the different kinds of anarthas or disqualifications on the path of ecstatic loving devotional service to the Lord, we can only talk about a few of them because there is so much to cover. Today we talk about these:
Anarthas are of four kinds: (1) svarūpa-bhrama (illusion about spiritual identity), (2) asat-tṛṣṇā (thirst for that which is unreal; that is, material enjoyment), (3) aparādha (offenses) and (4) hṛdaya-daurbalya (weakness of heart).
Svarūpa-bhrama is of four kinds: (1) sva-tattva- or jīva-svarūpa-bhrama (illusion about one’s own spiritual identity), (2) paratattva-bhrama (illusion about the spiritual identity of the supreme absolute truth), (3) sādhya-sādhana-tattva-bhrama (illusion about sādhana-bhakti, the means of spiritual perfection, and sādhya, the object to be obtained by such sādhana, or in other words prema-bhakti) and (4) māyā-tattva-bhrama (illusion about the Lord’s external energy, māyā).
Asat-tṛṣṇā is of four types: (1) varieties of desires for material enjoyment in this world, (2) desires for enjoyment in the higher planetary systems of Svargaloka, (3) desires for the attainment of the eight mystic siddhis and the nine divine jewels of Kuvera (padma, mahāpadma, caṅkha, makara, kacchapa, mukunda, kunda, nīla and kharva) and (4) the desire for mukti.
Aparādha is of four kinds: (1) offenses towards Śrī Kṛṣṇa, (2) offenses towards kṛṣṇa-nāma, (3) offenses towards kṛṣṇa-svarūpa (the Deity form of the Lord) and (4) offenses towards the tadīya-cit-kaṇa-jīvas (living entities who are infinitesimal particles of spirit belonging to the Lord).
Hṛdaya-daurbalya is of four kinds: (1) tuccha-āsakti (attachment for useless things), (2) kūṭī-nāṭī (deceitful behaviour – the word kūṭī-nāṭī may be broken down into the constituent parts kū, bad or evil, and na or nāṭī, that which is forbidden. In that case it would mean doing wicked deeds or doing that which is forbidden), (3) mātsarya (envy) and (4) sva-pratissṭhā-lālasā (desire for one’s own fame and prestige).

Today’s Satsang is about the four categories of anarthas or obstacles to the development of devotional service. Recognizing these imperfections is the first stage of getting rid of them, so all devotees should be eager to understand the types of anarthas. I have attached a PDF of the text of Śrī Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu-biṇḍu from which the material for this Satsang is derived.
