Evening Darshan 23 August 2010: Bhagavad-gītā 3.19-20

tasmād asaktaḥ satataṁ
kāryaṁ karma samācara
asakto hy ācaran karma
param āpnoti pūruṣaḥ

TRANSLATION

Therefore, without being attached to the fruits of activities, one should act as a matter of duty; for by working without attachment, one attains the Supreme. [Bhagavad-gītā 3.19]

karmaṇaiva hi saṁsiddhim

āsthitā janakādayaḥ

loka-saṅgraham evāpi

sampaśyan kartum arhasi

karmaṇā—by work; eva—even; hi—certainly; saṁsiddhim—perfection; āsthitāḥ—situated; janaka-ādayaḥ—kings like Janaka and others; loka-saṅgraham—educating the people in general; eva—also; api—for the sake of; sampaśyan—by considering; kartum—to act; arhasi—deserve.

TRANSLATION

Even kings like Janaka and others attained the perfectional stage by performance of prescribed duties. Therefore, just for the sake of educating the people in general, you should perform your work. [Bhagavad-gītā 3.20]

Questions

**************************************************************
What is meant in the verse by ¨one should act as a matter of duty¨?

But in order to do work for Krsna, one should be self-realized first? Because if one is not self-realized how would he know what Krsna wants?

So karma-kanda is also bhakti?

So giving up of your activities is not permitted then? For example if one is a scientist, should he then remain being a scientist, but do all his work for Krsna? But then how would he know what Krsna wants from him, without being completely self-realized?

I was listening to Śrila Prabhupāda recording on the Bhagavad-gītā and he mentions that the king is responsible for the citizens welfare and determines war and peace. In the context of this world culture is war acceptable? Under what conditions?

Can we achieve perfectional stage just by performing prescribed duties?

I feel that in this Kali-Yuga material world there is no nice work, So any work will do as long as it is not sinful?

Any work that we do, like luciano said, is coming from some kind of a sinful source, so if we do it for Krsna are we on our way to Self-Realization?

Currently our parents (or guardians) prescribe our duties, then how should one rebel against that? Especially when you owe so much to them, although they don’t want anything in return, but they don’t want to you to give up studies and all, argh it is very tricky and frustrating!

evaṁ pravartitaṁ cakraṁ
nānuvartayatīha yaḥ
aghāyur indriyārāmo
moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati

evam—thus prescribed; pravartitam—established by the Vedas; cakram—cycle; na—does not; anuvartayati—adopt; iha—in this life; yaḥ—one who; aghāyuḥ—life full of sins; indriya-ārāmaḥ—satisfied in sense gratification; mogham—useless; pārtha—O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); saḥ—one who does so; jīvati—lives.

My dear Arjuna, a man who does not follow this prescribed Vedic system of sacrifice certainly leads a life of sin, for a person delighting only in the senses lives in vain. [Bhagavad-gītā 3.17]

Questions asked:

**************************************************************
+How is Karmi work and Vedic system of sacrifice different? Verse states here, ” Therefore, for those who want to enjoy this material world, the above-mentioned cycle of performing yajñas is absolutely necessary. ” So sense gratfication is also Ok?
+What happens if animal kills an animal, that is prescribed for them right, for these souls?
+The consciousness of kshatriyas must have been really high, considering they’re able to access these spiritual weapons instantaneously, no?. For eg, in the Mahabharatha.
+Where can I read about the science of spiritual weapons?

karma brahmodbhavaṁ viddhi
brahmākṣara-samudbhavam
tasmāt sarva-gataṁ brahma
nityaṁ yajñe pratiṣṭhitam

karma—work; brahma—Vedas; udbhavam—produced from; viddhi—one should know; brahma—the Vedas; akṣara—the Supreme Brahman (Personality of Godhead); samudbhavam; directly manifested; tasmāt—therefore; sarva-gatam—all-pervading; brahma—Transcendence; nityam—eternally; yajñe—in sacrifice; pratiṣṭhitam—situated.

Regulated activities are prescribed in the Vedas, and the Vedas are directly manifested from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Consequently the all-pervading Transcendence is eternally situated in acts of sacrifice. [Bhagavad-gītā 3.15]

Evening Darshan 16 August 2010: Bhagavad-gītā 3.14

In this darshan the verses explained were:

annād bhavanti bhūtāni
parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ
yajñād bhavati parjanyo
yajñaḥ karma-samudbhavaḥ

annāt—from grains; bhavanti—grow; bhūtāni—the material bodies; parjanyāt—from rains; anna—food grains; sambhavaḥ—are made possible; yajñāt—from the performance of sacrifice; bhavati—becomes possible; parjanyaḥ—rains; yajñaḥ—performance of yajña; karma—prescribed duties; samudbhavaḥ—born of.

All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rain. Rains are produced by performance of yajña [sacrifice], and yajña is born of prescribed duties. [Bhagavad-gītā 3.14]

Here are the questions asked during the darshan:

**************************************************************
+How come all these sinful people who don’t chant are money rich and have so many foods?
+Is consciousness really effected or is it the mind, intelligence and ego?
+Maybe Babaji sometimes can cook for the devotees in the ashram. Does eating his leftovers can create the same effect?
+How and what does a devotee do when away from home and altar offer food?

yajña-śiṣṭāśinaḥ santo
mucyante sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ
bhuñjate te tv aghaṁ pāpā
ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt

Here are the questions asked during the darshan:

**************************************************************
+In the purport, why Govinda, Kṛṣṇa and Mukunda are mentioned separately?
+Śravanam is described in Vedabase as “Hearing about”. This can be considered a sacrifice?
+What is it meant by ¨compact of love¨ in the purport?
+Do those killed creatures get liberated? If we offer the end product to Visnu in right consciousness?
