We begin the Second Wave of Nectar of Devotion with Chapter 20, “Transcendental Mellow & Vibhāva.” In this division of Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu the author wants to describe the general symptoms of the transcendental mellow (loving mood) of discharging devotional service. In this division of Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu there are five general topics: 1) vibhāva—special symptoms of ecstasy, 2) anubhāva—subsequent ecstasy, 3) sāttvika-bhāva—constitutional ecstasy, 4) vyabhicārī-bhāva—aggressive ecstasy and 5) sthāyi-bhāva—fervent ecstasy.

Western materialistic culture is based on the misconception that we are the owners and enjoyers of the resources of the earth. Thus in a very short time we have practically exhausted the resources and values of the earth: metals, oil, soil, forests, oceans and so on. We have contaminated the whole planet and killed so many innocent animals, plants and people. The karma from all this irresponsible exploitation is very bad, and that karma has come due. Thus the whole materialistic civilization is collapsing. This is all due to complete ignorance of the real nature of consciousness. Consciousness is a taboo subject in the West; all the authentic ancient knowledge of consciousness has been suppressed. You cannot find it anywhere. We are connected with the original disciplic lineage of the Esoteric Teaching of the Vedas, which describes consciousness scientifically. That means it is not a theory, not a belief, but a process that you can test by experiment and verify for yourself. Thus we do not ask for faith, but for real knowledge based on experience.

We have the feeling that an era of preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the West is ending. The window of opportunity to become pure devotee is closing. So many people got copies of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books that everyone got the opportunity to become a devotee. Unfortunately they decided to ignore this great fortunate opportunity, and interfered with the ISKCON movement. This has led directly to today’s economic and social meltdown.

I took the evening off, so Uddhava Prabhu leads a nice long kīrtan, then the devotees chant Śrī Viṣṇusahasranāma. Then there is a nice discussion about our plans for traveling to India, the service attitude and how to offer obeisances to the Vaiṣṇava devotees.

A long time ago I made a promise to my guru Śrīla Prabhupāda, that I would serve his mission for the rest of my life, at least. After Śrīla Prabhupāda’s disappearance, there was a great disturbance in ISKCON, and most of us had to leave. Most of the devotees who left could not maintain their practice or preaching service on their own. They gradually fell down and stopped preaching.
I could not live with that. I maintained my desire to preach, and as soon as I got an opportunity, renounced materialistic life, finished my sādhana and began preaching. That was in 2001-2002, and since then I have been a full-time preacher. Somehow I have been able to maintain my promise to Śrīla Prabhupāda. Kṛṣṇa maintained and protected this mission, because I kept my promise to Śrīla Prabhupāda. Even if Śrīla Prabhupāda had to leave this planet and could not maintain his promise, Kṛṣṇa kept it for him.

We are closing our mountain āśram in Chile and returning to US for Janmāṣṭamī. We will tour in US for a while then go to India in September. Real community means the ability to relate to all different kinds of people, not just those who are similar to us. The Vedas give us the varṇāśrama-dharma system so that we can have proper relationships with others. Then everyone has a proper designation and an understanding of their role in the community and relationship with others. So we will have the varṇāśrama-dharma system in our community.

We are all looking for the perfect place in this world, but there cannot be anyplace more perfect than the places where Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa performed His pastimes. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not something ‘out there’ that we have to get, but something already existing within that we have to rediscover.
