This Sunday Satsang discusses the components of bhakti-rasa. These are definitions extracted from Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu and summarized in my book Śrī Bhakti-Nirukti. Today we shall discuss the following:
Sthāyi-bhāva – The permanent sentiment in one of the five primary relationships of śānta, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya or mādhurya, which is known as mukhya-rati. This also refers to the dominant sentiment in the seven secondary mellows (gauṇa-rati) of laughter, wonder, chivalry, compassion, anger, fear and disgust.
Vibhāva consists of ālambana (that in which rati is tasted) and uddīpana (that which stimulates rati).
Ālambana consists of viśayālambana (the object of rati – Kṛṣṇa) and āśrayālambana (the reservoir of rati – the devotee)
Anubhāva – Visible actions that illustrate the spiritual emotions situated within the heart (dancing, singing and so on).
Sāttvika-bhāva – Eight symptoms of spiritual ecstasy arising exclusively from viśuddha-sattva, or in other words, when the heart is overwhelmed by emotions in connection with mukhya-rati or gauṇa-rati.
Vyabhicāri-bhāva – Thirty-three internal spiritual emotions, which emerge from the nectarean ocean of the sthāyi-bhāva, cause it to swell, and then merge back into that ocean.

This Sunday Satsang is a continuation of last week’s, where we talked about devotional symptoms and emotions (vyabhicāri-bhāvas). This time we’ll discuss garva (pride), śaṅkā (apprehension), trāsa (fear), āvega (agitation) and unmāda (madness due to extreme bliss). These are all wonderful transcendental symptoms of ecstasy, and every devotee should be familiar with them.

We continue the Darshan series with a melodious kīrtan led by Kānāi dās. He is really making good progress, especially since he got a little MIDI keyboard and hooked it up to his computer. This is followed by a nice class on Śrī Īśopaniṣad, mantras 6-11 led by Bhakta Neville.
